Assignments

Summaries: 


A summary should be done for each reading assignment on the syllabus that is marked with “S[#]”.  The summary should include the following:

 

1.   One or two single-spaced pages on which the student summarizes the central points of the reading, separately and in the student’s own words (full sentences).  The summaries should capture all of the main points of the reading and include sub-points that are indented.  Be sure to avoid merely listing topics without indicating the substance of each point.

2.   Two discussion points that make reference to specific passages in the reading:

a.   Please be sure that the points are not simply factual questions.  If you ask a question, please be sure that you state your understanding of the passage as best you can before stating the question. 

 

Please label the first page of each assignment at the top with the exact reading title, the S#, and your name – all on one line at the top of the first page. Name your document as follows:  [your last name] [S#].  Summaries are due before class on the day of the assignment.  I will accept a late summary for one week after the due date at half points, after which I will not accept it.  Please note, however, that incomplete portfolios are graded down.

 

Submit your summary with discussion points to me via google docs before class.  In class, have your summary and three discussion points in front of you, either on a tablet or in hard copy.

 

Tutorials:

 

Tutorials will occur every week for one half-hour.  Each tutorial session will include myself and two students.  Students will submit no less than one thousand new words of writing on alternate weeks.  See the schedule for tutorial times and the dates on which you submit and read.  The main purpose of the tutorials is for us to discuss your ideas and work, not primarily for me to convey information to you.  I’ll ask questions, offer support and constructive critique, and make suggestions regarding structure.   The other student will participate in the conversation, keeping the focus primarily on you.  Overall, we will strive for a balanced conversation. 

 

Before tutorials begin, I will assign the topic to you and then we will confirm it in the first tutorial, possibly making adjustments to suit your specific interests in Jung.   You should submit your new writing to the google doc entitled “Tutorials” by 8 PM, two nights before the tutorial date on which we will discuss your work.  This gives your reader and me the time to look at what you’ve written before we meet.

 

The tutorial score (out of 150 points) will be based on regular attendance, preparation, level of progress, and active engagement in the tutorial sessions.  It will also be based on how well your changes and additions reflect the conversations.  Your writing will begin by the second or third tutorial.  Each student will submit writing for four tutorials and read another student’s work four times.  Please note that I treat an absence from a tutorial session as an absence from class.

Paper:  

The paper counts for 200 points.  It is an opportunity to develop your knowledge and thinking about a focused topic concerning Jung’s ideas and writings.  The paper will be based on library research and requires that you engage at least five outside sources.  It should develop your own thinking based on your course reading and library research.  Minimum length is fifteen pages polus bibliography.  Please refer to the following list of acceptable sources.

 

 

Exams:

 

The two exams give you the opportunity to show and synthesize your knowledge of the course readings and lectures. The exams are posted on Blackboard and also available below:

Portfolio:

 

Students will compile a portfolio of their work through the semester.  The portfolio will help me to grade holistically, taking into consideration the overall trajectory in the level and quality of your work.  The 50 point score will reflect the apparent care that went into creating the portfolio, and the apparent thoughtfulness that went into your integrative reflections.  The contents of the portfolio should be organized into the following sections, divided by labeled tabs for each section:

 

1.   TABLE OF CONTENTS

2.   SUMMARIES

3.   EXAM 1

4.   EXAM 2

5.   PAPER

6.   INTEGRATIVE REFLECTIONS (Minimum 300 words.)

a.  For this section, please compose a set of broad reflections on what you take to be the major insights (if any) that you have gained from the readings and discussions.  Be specific about readings.   In your reflections, consider the implications for your life outside of academia.  There are no right answers and absolutely no need to seem more positive than you actually feel about the materials and the class.

b.  Evaluate your own work in the class.  How do you think you did in listening, presenting, reading, and writing?  What would you do differently
